ELAC Information 2020-2021

The English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) is a group of parents and teachers working to meet the needs of our second language learners. This committee strives to keep our parents informed, giving them a voice on issues that affect them and their students at Paloma Elementary and in the San Marcos Unified School District. Better communication equals better involvement and greatly increases the chances for success in the academic environment. Because much of the educational system maybe foreign to its members, the objectives of the committee are to educate parents in matters having to do with the educational system in this country and to stress the importance of a student's daily attendance. This committee is not a social club. State and Federal education laws require districts that have 50 or more English learners to form a committee for the purpose of dealing with matters relevant to their needs. And schools with 20 or more English Learners are required to establish a Committee at the school site. Because 90% of EL students in the district are Spanish speakers, meetings are conducted in Spanish.

The committee, facilitated by , is mandated to meet no less than four times per year. Assistant Principal, Natasha Walls, represents the administration on the committee and , represents the district. Parents are notified of upcoming meetings by flyers in the Thursday envelopes and by the mass phone system.

Committee Members 2018-2019 will be determined at the first meeting.

The Paloma ELAC meetings are posted on the school’s website. Every meeting will cover ELAC related topic and an educational workshop.
